Here are 3 fun and meaningful things to do in the garden with your kids. It's sure to get their imagination going.
1. Plant a Mini Vegetable or Herb Garden & Let Them Water It Daily
- Why it’s great: Teaches responsibility, patience, and where food comes from.
- Kid-friendly ideas: Let them plant fast-growers like radishes, cherry tomatoes, or mint. They will enjoy focusing on getting the tiny seeds in the holes. It's okay if a few more are sown.
2. Go on a Bug Hunt
- Why it’s great: Encourages curiosity about nature and science and sparks creativity and storytelling.
- How to do it: Give them magnifying glasses and a checklist (bees, ladybugs, worms, ants, butterflies). Talk about what each bug does in the garden and let them create a story with the bugs as characters.
3. Let them Harvest and Choose How to Use The Harvest.
- Why it’s great: Teaches responsibility, patience, and allows them to see the fruits of their labor.
- How to do it: Give them a small basket and show them what is ready to be harvested. Allow them to help pick and follow a recipe to utilize it in a meal. Example: Pumpkin --> Pumpkin Pie, Carrots ----> Carrots + Dip,
